Ballet Saâmato

Ballet Saâmato dancers with drums

In the summer 2010, Ballet Saâmato, an amazing troupe of professional West African drummers and dancers was to be touring arts festivals in and around Vancouver Island and the lower mainland.

Unfortunately, Ballet Saâmato were refused artists’ visas by Canadian authorities. We are devastated, as are the artists, of course. We plan to continue to work toward making this dream come true.

Hear an interview (in French) with Gigla Sylla, founding director of Ballet Saâmato:

We are forging ahead in a time of reduced arts support and increased caution around Muslim countries. It is vital that we persevere.

Thank you again to everyone who offered their support of this in a myriad of ways. Your support of Ballet Saâmato is support of a vision of peace and cultural understanding.
